Your favorites from 2020

December 29, 2020

Psst… There are two days left to get early bird pricing for Cohort #2 of Nexus Foundations, which kicks off in late February 2021. If you’re interested in taking the course, I recommend enrolling now to reserve your spot and capture the discount. We’re planning out updates to the course for cohort 2 now—it’s going to be great.

👋  Good morning!

Welcome to Nexus, a newsletter, podcast, and membership community for smart people applying smart building technology—written by James Dice. If you’re new to Nexus, you might want to start here.

Since it’s the last newsletter of the year, we’re going to change it up a bit. If you’re taking some time off work for the holidays, here’s a reading list to catch up on the best Nexus stuff of the year:

  1. 🎙️  Your favorite podcasts
  2. 📚  Your favorite free posts
  3. 💡  Nexus Pro members’ favorite posts

And by “favorite”, I mean most engaged and shared and viewed.

Enjoy!

1. 🎙️  Your favorite podcasts

---

#1: 🎧 #003: Nick Gayeski of KGS Buildings on FDD at scale and 5 waves of smart building tech

✨  The best part: The five waves of use cases for analytics beyond energy savings

---

#2: 🎧 #019: Tyson Soutter on how to sell smart building technology

✨  Why you need to align yourself with your client’s long term goals

---

#3: 🎧 #008: Jean-Simon Venne on using AI to transition from reactive to proactive

✨  How to use reinforcement learning (a type of AI) to improve upon the current BAS

---

Honorable mention because it’s 🔥  but hasn’t had time to rack up listens/views: 🎧 #029: Google's plan for smart buildings at scale

2. 📚 Your favorite free posts

---

#1: The BAS architecture of the future (Part 2 of 3)

✨  Matt’s checklists for each layer in the architecture

---

#2: The BAS industry is broken… here’s why (Part 1 of 3)

✨  Working with Matt and making a friend started here. Great fun.

---

#3: 🔍 Deep Dive: How to evaluate smart building technology 🔎

✨  Sharing my personal vendor list and having others reach out and share theirs too. Fun fact: I’ve updated this evaluation framework for the Nexus Foundations course and the students really liked it.

This installment of NEXUS is free for everyone. If you would like to get full access to all content, join the NEXUS Pro community. Members get exclusive access to the Nexus Vendor Landscape, monthly events, weekly deep dives, and all past deep dives.

#1: How new technology is replacing old supervisory controls (Part 1 of 3)

✨  This is my favorite piece of the year. It started me down a several-month-long learning rabbit hole that I’m very proud of. Lots of concepts that I’ve been building on started right here (overlay vs. blank sheet of paper, advanced supervisory control, hierarchy of needs).

---

#2: ASC 2.0: cutting through the hype (Part 2 of 3)

In part 2, I poked all the holes I could in the value proposition of advanced supervisory controls. Then I built the hype back up.

---

#3: A strategic approach to advanced supervisory control (Part 3 of 3)

✨ The five-part strategy for ASC:

  1. Design a provider-agnostic, decoupled, standardized, owner-driven BAS (Ahem, the BAS Architecture of the Future)
  2. Establish enabling practices
  3. Start with setpoints, schedules, and sequences
  4. Add the complex algorithms based on ROI
  5. Perform M&V independently and decoupled from pricing models

---

Honorable mention because I think it’s 🔥  but you gave it no love: What the digital twin conversation is missing

OK, that’s all for this week, err, year—thanks for reading Nexus in 2020!

Happy New Year, and see you in 2021!
