A Community-Driven Keynote at NexusCon

September 11, 2024

Hey Friends,

When we started organizing NexusCon (now less than three weeks away!), we spent about a week looking for keynote speakers. It wasn’t hard to come up with a list of people, with so many amazing thought leaders in our industry, but it didn’t take long to realize we needed someone who could speak our language — someone from within our Nexus Labs community.

Eventually, rather than just choosing one person, we decided to open up the keynote by collecting input from our entire community. I’ll be acting as a synthesizer (while also adding some of my own thoughts), with the goal of expressing how we all feel about the state of our industry.

To make it a bit more fun, I thought I’d set the stage by comparing today’s real estate operation to The Flinstones. Yes, those Flinstones — Fred, Wilma, Barney, Betty, Pebbles, BammBamm, and, of course, Dino.

If you ever had the opportunity to watch the show, you remember that much of its charm and humor came from the manual labor they all had to do (including the animals). So many of the jokes revolved around inefficient workflows and reactive maintenance… sound familiar?

When it originally aired in the 1960s, The Flintstones had a counterpart show produced by the same animation studio, which also aired in primetime on ABC. The Jetsons! While Fred and Wilma lived in the Stone Age, George, Jane, Judy, Elroy, and Astro lived in an imagined future with advanced technology that created an efficient, sustainable, and user-friendly utopia.

But, without TV magic, that leaves us with a critical question. How do we get from Bedrock to Orbit City? And that, my friends, is what I want to hear from you. Here’s how you can add your voice to our keynote speech, whether you’ll be attending NexusCon or not:

We’ve created a quick, 4-question survey that asks you to answer:

  1. If Bedrock (The Flintstones) is a 1 and Orbit City (The Jetsons) is a 10, where are we as an industry?

  2. To move us closer to Orbit City, what are 3 initiatives any real estate organization should undertake?

  3. As an organization implements those initiatives, what are their 3 biggest obstacles?

  4. What, in particular, do you think makes building owners hesitant to adopt smart building technologies?

You can take the survey here, and I would be yabba-dabba delighted if you do! NexusCon was created to be community-driven, and the keynote should be no different! Thanks a bronto-load!
