Digitize to Decarbonize: Case Studies for Practitioners

April 7, 2025

Welcome to our NexusCon 2024 event recordings! These recordings and slides are available for Nexus Pro Members only.

About NexusCon

The industry needed a different type of conference, so we built it. NexusCon 2024 was full of sponsor-free content, real-world case studies, and most importantly, our community.

We heard from 109 speakers across 24 different sessions over a span of 3 days. Although nothing beats the in-person real-time learnings from NexusCon, we are excited to release the NexusCon session recordings to our Nexus Pro Community. We have over 40 hours of hot takes, knowledge bombs, collaborations, and disagreements among smart buildings industry experts to share with you.

About the Session

Join us for an insightful session where three sustainability leaders attempting to reach their carbon target but constrained by shrinking capital budgets share their real-world experiences. Each speaker will present real case studies highlighting the challenges they faced, the lessons they learned, and the strategies they employed to drive significant reductions in carbon emissions. This session will provide practical insights into how technology and innovative practices can be leveraged to meet decarbonization goals, offering valuable takeaways for those looking to make a similar impact in their own operations. The following case studies will be included in this session:

IDL in Action: How Integrated Data Systems are Improving Campus Energy Management at Dartmouth College

Dartmouth College will share their journey in implementing the first phase of their Campus Energy Management System (CEMS), highlighting the successes and challenges encountered while integrating energy meter data across traditionally siloed building systems.

Smarter Energy Management for Office Portfolios

Shorenstein Properties and Gridium will share their decade-long partnership in optimizing energy management across a 9 million square foot real estate portfolio. Attendees will learn best practices for identifying hidden energy savings, managing peak demand, and leveraging advanced analytics to reduce costs and enhance building performance, all while contributing to Shorenstein’s broader decarbonization strategy.

Whole-Campus Decarbonization Planning

Stanford University will showcase their innovative approach to achieving hourly carbon neutrality by integrating highly calibrated virtual models with real-time utility metered data. Attendees will learn how this methodology optimizes energy consumption at both the building and central energy facility levels, laying the groundwork for future campus-wide decarbonization initiatives and investment prioritization.

The session will include breakout groups for the audience to discuss each case study and Q&A with each presenter. The session will be focused on answering the question: As a sustainability leader attempting to reach our carbon target but constrained by shrinking capital budgets, what strategies and tactics will accelerate my progress?
