Welcome to our Partner Pulse series. Nexus Labs’ Partners are at the forefront of the smart buildings revolution. With any revolution, there is continuous change while momentum builds. We want to keep our audience informed of accomplishments, breakthroughs, deployments, and developments within the companies leading our industry. We hope you enjoy this straightforward summary of what’s new at Exergenics, one of the leaders in the Advanced Supervisory Control category.
In 2023, Nexus Labs hosted the Buyer’s Guide to Advanced Supervisory Control, where Exergenics took the stage to showcase the strides they are making in the central utility plant (CUP) optimization. We caught up with Exergenics to see what’s new in 2024.
Highlights:
Exergenics has developed a powerful central plant simulation tool that is being used for energy optimization, equipment upgrades, M&V, and mechanical performance optimization.
Exergenics is solely focused on chill water plants. Their software takes historical data from the BAS and brings it into the Exergenics cloud. Within the cloud, Exergenics uses the laws of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics to model each piece of the chiller plant (chiller, pumps, cooling towers, etc.) and provide adjustments to the plant operation to use as little energy as possible while generating the same chilled water output.
The adjustments that the Exergenics model discovers are implemented by working collaboratively with the service contractor, who can make the necessary adjustments to the BAS. The Exergenics platform can also write condenser water setpoints directly to the BAS for real-time optimization via the cloud. Exergenics customers see typical savings of 5-25% from this optimization.
Since early 2020, Exergenics has effectively implemented its solutions in over 85 locations. Among its notable clientele are organizations such as Mirvac, Queensland Children's Hospital, CBRE & CSIRO.
Exergenics has demonstrated its value across various verticals, from well-known Fortune 50 banking institutions to the domains of entertainment, property management, manufacturing, software technology, district cooling, and data centers.
Exergenics success in both APAC and the United States is centered around collaboration and partnerships. Exergenics’ partners typically own the relationship with the end user and manage the implementation, while Exergenics is responsible for modeling the data, producing optimized strategies, and providing a rollout plan for the updates.
Exergenics has noticed superior data availability through general BMS/PLC systems in Australia as compared to the United States. However, the industry seems to move faster in the US, accelerating the opportunity for their solution.
The most impressive improvements to Exergenic's offering revolve around savings percentages and speed to savings. The most recent iteration of the Exergenics machine learning software can achieve 5-15% savings for the customer from a single isolated condenser water temperature reset algorithm, which can be deployed in under an hour. This speed to savings has been a game-changer for Exergenic’s customers, who often seek immediate energy savings and value the simplicity of the solution.
The key to achieving this is isolating the condenser water temperature setpoint as a single recommended point from the Exergenics system. Although it sounds simplistic, dynamic control of this setpoint based on extensive cloud-based modeling can significantly impact a plant’s performance.
In late 2024, Exergenics plans further hiring in the US, Australia, and the Middle East. In the meantime, the Exergenics team is hard at developing simulations around CapEx equipment upgrades within a central plant or portfolio of buildings. These new features unlock more insight into which equipment upgrades will reap the most significant benefits for plant owners and portfolio managers, acting as a capital planning tool for facilities personnel and asset managers.
