Hey friends,
One of the myriad ways Nexus Labs accelerates technology adoption is through our Subject Matter Expert (SME) Workshops.
We host these live and recorded SME Workshops once a month. Each one features a new expert in the Nexus Labs Community hosting a technical presentation and discussion around a particular smart building topic they are passionate about. The intent is not to pitch any particular product or solution, but to facilitate experts sharing their experiencesâŚboth triumphs and war storiesâŚ
These workshops are one of the perks exclusively available to members of the Nexus Pro Community. Nexus Pro is a community of nearly 600 changemakers who, cumulatively, know every nook and cranny of the smart buildings industry and what it will take to digitize and decarbonize the built environment.
If youâre considering joining us at NexusCon 2024, the expertise and content within the SME Workshops are indicative of what youâll get at the conference: an unwavering theme of (you guessed it) non-salesy, in-depth, thought-provoking, and interactive educational learning.
Take a peek through the last year of SME workshops below. If youâre not a Nexus Pro member, we wanted to give you a chance to see what all the fuss is about. Weâve unlocked one of our favorite SME Workshops on Spatial Computing for the Built Environment by Chrisoula Kapelonis, a Spatial Experience Designer who has worked at MIT, Harvard, and Google, so that all of you non-members can get a taste of what itâs like to be a Pro Member. You can access it HERE and below.

Chrisoula Kapelonis, a Spatial Experience Designer who has worked at MIT, Harvard, and Google, demystifies the state of spatial computing today. As more IoT devices become available to building occupants, human-computer interaction is evolving to the point that computing systems have more spatial awareness of the physical environment.

Nexus Labsâ own Head of Product, Brad Bonavida, peels back the curtain on the development of The Nexus Marketplace: our in-development digital marketplace where buyers of smart buildings technology come to get the most advanced, thorough, and educational information on what technologies exist that can help them achieve their outcomes.
Brad discusses the complexity of creating an ontology of Layers and Categories to split vendor offerings into groupings that buyers can actually understand, and shares with us the unique trends you see when scanning 1000s of vendor websites.

Evan Petkov, Founder of Optiml, showcases the future of asset management and retrofits: using AI and data-driven SaaS to accelerate building decarbonization. Companies, like Optiml, are using advanced algorithms to figure out the best retrofits for each unique building without spreadsheet analysis paralysis.

Ciaran Kelly, Associate Director of Building Intelligence at Hoare Lea, unveils the creation of a Smart Buildings Overlay onto the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Plan of Work. This overlay helps ensure that the right foundations are put into place at the beginning of a new construction project and throughout every phase to make it as smart and effective as possible. Itâs a breath of fresh air to the legacy method of trying to tack on smart building features as an afterthought to construction.

Mandi Wedin, Founder and CEO of Feroce Real Estate Advisors, unpacks how Environmental Social Governance & Resilience (ESG+R) and Sustainable Financial Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) are shaping the future of the commercial real estate investment industry with both carrots and sticks. Mandi elaborates on how the impact of these frameworks trickles down from building owners to occupants, service providers, vendors, and pretty much anyone related to smart buildings.

Cameron Exley, Head of Technology Commercialization at Syntric, schools us on Operational Technology (OT) Networking and how intertwined it has become with IT Networking.
